On October 9, 2020, we had the pleasure of having Solu as our special guest on the MyAreaVibe Spotlight Show. On the show, Solu was able to express her unique life experience and how her deepened self-love has pushed her to release her music to the world.
Last month, she released a music video called “Love Self” . She encourages others to take the time to truly know themselves and what they need as an individual. In this busy world, there are so many ways that society will pull you into being a specific person and to follow social rules. Solu expresses that you should surround yourself with people that will embrace who you are and who will respect your authentic self. There have been moments when she self-censored about a topic that was impacting her. But not anymore. She knows that if she has something to say, she will say it on the spot without holding anything back. She’s not afraid to express her opinion and if the other person does not agree with it, it is okay. It’s not the end of the world. If the other person is genuinely her friend, they will agree to disagree on the topic, and their friendship will move forward. If the other person completely disagrees and does not want to continue the friendship, she is okay with letting that person go. She would rather stick to being authentic to herself and be surrounded by people that genuinely care about her than be surrounded by a lot of people that she has to hide her true self.
Solu was born in Phoenix, AZ, and her parents are from Nigeria. She identifies herself as a Third Culture Kid. “A third culture kid is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parents’ culture.” She grew up in the Nigerian community while living in America. By learning who she is, she is becoming more comfortable with herself.
MC AJ was born in Burundi but he has spent a majority of his life outside of his homeland. Being a Third Culture Kid can lead to feeling as an outsider. But, at the end of the day, you can only be yourself and love yourself. Home might not be a specific country but the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of the same background. Solu has noticed that the more she is authentic and expresses her story, the more she realizes that she is not alone and has a special way to encourage people to focus on their Self Love.
